Everyone enjoys a trip to the beach but sadly they are increasingly laden with litter and plastic which, not only is not great for beach goers, it is extremely harmful to marine life and the environment. We were horrified to learn that each year enough plastic is thrown away to circle the earth four times and it is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean!
What can we do?
The team at Fowey Hall decided to join the fight against plastic and are working alongside an already great team of dedicated, local volunteers to do a fortnightly beach clean. We are so lucky to have two beautiful beaches on our doorstep, Readymoney Cove & Whitehouse beach both of which are only a short walk from the hotel – so we decided to do our bit, get involved and keep Fowey’s beaches clean and plastic free.
When the team arrived the beach it already looked clean and we started to wonder why we were searching for litter on a litter-free beach! But when you started to really look it was surprising to see how much litter we actually managed to find – most of it clear plastic.
Back at the hotel we are now using paper straws and cups too – such small changes can truly make the world of difference! What can you do? Well anyone is welcome to join us for the beach clean or there is a #2minutebeachclean board at Readymoney cove so before you head home from the beach, do your bit, pick up any litter you see and make a real, positive difference!
